Hair Loss after Weight Loss

Hair Loss is a concern for Weight Loss Surgery patients.

Why does it happen, and what can you do about it?

You may notice more hair fall than usual in the months directly after Bariatric Surgery. Initially, this is a common side effect of the procedure as your body adjusts. Hair loss can occur in the first 3 – 6 months directly after surgery. Supplements are needed to promote healthy hair, skin and nails. A specific Bariatric multivitamin can help prevent hair loss from continuing long-term.

Hair will always recover given correct conditions, as the hair follicle is not damaged, but healthy food and specific supplements are essential for healthy hair. If hair loss persists for more than six months, it is most likely related to nutritional deficiency.

Your surgery contributes to lower intake and reduced absorption of:

  • Protein
  • Iron
  • Biotin
  • Zinc
  • Vitamin B12

After weight loss surgery, increased hair loss may be associated with:

  • Inconsistent use of specific Bariatric Multivitamin formula
  • Inadequate diet or limited range of foods

Key Nutrients Related to Hair Loss

Protein

Protein deficiency is related to hair loss. Under chewing food, low stomach acid, vomiting, food aversions and alcohol consumption all impact protein levels. The minimum recommended protein intake is 60 – 80g per day. Ask your dietitian for more info.

Iron

Iron is the nutrient most related to hair loss. Iron stores (ferritin) falling below 40mg/L are highly linked to hair loss. When hair is falling out, a 65mg dose of iron twice daily has proven to support healthy hair growth. Always consult your team when adding iron supplements.

Vitamin B12

B12 deficiency may a ect the colour and texture of the hair. Vitamin B12 promotes healthy hair growth by helping in the formation of red blood cells. The ASMBS Bariatric Nutrition Guidelines recommend that WLS patients take 330-500mcg B12 daily to support overall health and prevent hair loss.

Zinc

Zinc encourages growth and development of hair. In cases of hair loss, 15mg per day is recommended.

Biotin

Biotin stimulates keratin production in hair and can increase the rate of follicle growth. A lack of biotin is connected to both the loss of hair colour and thinning hair.

Healthy Fats

15ml of flaxseed oil is recommended in patients suffering from hair loss. 2 tbsp of olive oil also showed improvements.

Focus on Your Nutrients

When hair loss continues more than six months post-op, this nutritional regime may be the boost needed to rebalance.

  • 80 – 100g of complete protein daily
  • 15ml Flaxseed Oil
  • 2.5g Biotin
  • Bariatric Multivitamin every day

Always under professional guidance. Consult your dietitian for personalised recommendations.
